EVENT SCHEDULE

Seminar 1: Relevance and Purpose in California Chardonnay

Time: 10am - 11am

Moderator: Jon Bonné, Wine Editor, San Francisco Chronicle

PanelistsGavin Chanin, Chanin Wine Company; Matt Licklider, Lioco; Rajat Parr, Sandhi Wines; Bob Varner, Varner

Description: Chardonnay remains the most popular wine in California. But what is its purpose? Despite the “Anything But Chardonnay” backlash of the last decade, why do some of the best winemakers in California continue to tackle this protean grape? Is it a profound vehicle to express terroir, or just base material for a winemaking style? If the former, how is terroir expression in Chardonnay best achieved? These are questions that are relevant not just for California, but also for Burgundy and the rest of the Chardonnay producing wine world.

Seminar 2: Exploring Whole Cluster Fermentation in Pinot Noir

Time: 11:30am - 12:30pm

Moderator: TBD

Panelists: TBD

DescriptionWhole cluster fermentation (leaving the grapes on the stems during fermentation) is a controversial technique when it comes to pinot noir.  A winemaking process that dates back centuries. the practice fell out of favor with the advent of modern destemmers, as including stems in fermentations has major impact on the finished product. Nevertheless, following the lead of some of Burgundy's most heralded domaines (Romanée-Conti, Leroy and Dujac, to name a few), a growing number of California winemakers are enthusiastically employing the technique. In this seminar you will  taste examples of whole cluster pinots from IPOB winemakers and come to understand why this method of fermentation has both enthusiastic adherents and skeptical naysayers.

IPOB Consumer Tasting

Time: 6pm - 9pm

A walk-around tasting featuring the pinot noirs and chardonnays of IPOB's twenty-eight member wineries. Seminar ticket holders may opt to attend the afternoon tasting from 1-4pm, instead of the evening tasting. You must still purchase a ticket for the tasting. Please email us if you would prefer to attend the afternoon tasting.

In Pursuit of Balance

In Pursuit of Balance seeks to promote dialogue around the meaning and relevance of balance in California pinot noir and chardonnay. IPOB was created by Rajat Parr of Michael Mina and RN74, and Jasmine Hirsch of Hirsch Vineyards, to celebrate wineries striving to produce balanced pinot noir and chardonnay in California. Our first event was held in San Francisco in 2011.
